Chocolate Mousse and Brownie Shot Glass Dessert

Learn how to easy it is to make a chocolate brownie and chocolate mousse shot glass dessert.

Update: I’ve created a video tutorial of this recipe! Watch the video below to learn how to make these delicious mini desserts!

Happy (food) Friday! Wow, this week flew by! Today I wanted to share a simple dessert I made for my sweet friend’s baby shower last weekend. Kelly has been craving all things chocolate during her pregnancy so a chocolate dessert was a must! One of the women co-hosting the shower with us suggested I made a “shot glass” dessert since she had a ton of shot glasses.

I searched the web for a simple, chocolate dessert and couldn’t find any that weren’t time consuming (I had a lot of other things to make for the shower) and that didn’t use Cool Whip (ok, I admit, I loved the stuff as a kid, but now it just kinda grosses me out. I’m sorry to all you Cool Whip fans). So I decided to combine a few recipes. I’m glad I did! It ended up being super simple to make, looked cute, and was the perfect chocolatey ending to a wonderful baby shower.

Makes 12 servings

Ingredients: brownies (use your favorite recipe or box mix) / one box of instant chocolate pudding mix / 1 1/2 cups 2% milk / 1 cup heavy whipping cream / shot glasses

  1. In a medium size bowl (I used my Kitchenaid stand mixer) beat the pudding mix and milk on medium-high until it’s pudding consistency.
  2. In a separate large bowl (I used my metal mixing bowl), use an electric mixer to beat the whipping cream until it’s fluffy and peaks form. Fold the pudding mixture into the whipped cream until it’s combined.
  3. Layer crumbled brownie bits and some chocolate mousse in each shot glass. I piped the mousse into each glass. If you don’t have a piping bag just use a large zip top bag an cut a corner of the bottom of the bag. Top with a few more crumbled brownie bits and put them back in the fridge until you’re ready to serve them!

A few tips:

This recipe can be made a day or two ahead of time. Make sure to cover the mousse tightly with plastic wrap so it doesn’t pick up any smells or tastes from other things in the fridge.

When making whipped cream, it’s best to use a metal bowl. Also, put the bowl in the freezer for about 15-20 minutes before you make the whipped cream. This helps it come together and make perfectly fluffy whipped cream.

    1. Hi Mary, unfortunately I don’t know the calorie count on these. If you are watching calories, I’d recommend serving them in small shot glasses to create smaller portions.

  1. Thanks for this. It is so hard finding a recipe that isn’t time consuming. Can’t wait to try these

    1. You can but I would wait and pipe the top layer of mouse just before serving. If you do it ahead of time, it will probably settle a bit and not look as pretty.

  2. Hi, though I was happy to find your recipe for the chocolate mousse and shot glass dessert, which I am going to try and hope it turns out without a few pieces of info on your recipe (i did not have time to watch a video i just want the recipe) what size pudding mix, what size brownie mix and is one serving one shot glass? I am maybe not looking deep and far enough for those answers. however over and over I find great sounding recipes that say something like 1 shallot? a shallot can be the size of a marble to the size of a golf ball, how about 1/4 cup of minced shallots, easy simple for the novice and the pro. just a tip to help us be successfull from you great creators.

    1. Hi Debra. Thanks for the feedback; I posted this recipe over 4 years ago and I now include exact measurements in my recipes. Use one small box of pudding (they are usually just over 3 oz.) and one regular size brownie mix (you can bake them in an 8″ x 8″ pan or even a 13″ x 9″ pan for a quicker bake time). Yes, one shot glass is one serving. Happy baking!

      1. Hi Brianna, it only takes a couple minutes when mixing with a hand or stand mixer. If it’s not thickening, perhaps you’re using regular pudding mix rather than instant?

  3. Hey I’m from the UK where can I get chohckate pudding from the instant one?? Is it the same as the instant chocolate sponge cake mixture?

    1. Hi Warda, instant pudding isn’t the same as instant sponge cake mix. Since I live in the US I’m not sure where to find it in the UK but I’d recommend checking your local grocery store or on Amazon.

  4. Hi Sarah! Love the recipe..nice and easy to follow!! Would I be able to add gelatine so it would keep its form for a few days if i make it in advance?

    1. Thanks Ruthy! I’m glad you found it helpful. I haven’t tried using gelatin though I’m sure it can be done. It might change the texture though.

  5. Your chocolate mousse apparently is De-Licious!!!!I made it yesterday for my family. I am observing Lent and gave up sweets……I can’t wait to try it myself. Love your recipes. Lots of love from small town Saskatchewan ,Canada.:)

    1. I’d recommend trying coconut milk or your favorite nondairy milk! I haven’t tried it before, but I think it should work. You can also look for a vegan chocolate pudding recipe and use that in place of this one.

  6. Hi,

Can I fully assemble this 24 hours ahead? Will the brownie become soggy? Mouse become watery? Ty

  7. Hi, do you have a particular type of brownie recipe you’d recommend using for these? I’d like to make the brownies homemade and I’m finding all sorts of recipes. I’m finding recipes for “fudgy” brownies, “cakey” brownies, and in between. I was thinking of maybe using a recipe that wasn’t as “fudgy” since the mousse already adds extra chocolate… What are your thoughts? Or do you have a favorite brownie recipe you’d recommend?

  8. This was so delicious and easy to prepare. I had a bunch of Oui yogurt jars and was looking for a dessert recipe to serve for our neighborhood Bunco game night. So glad I found this recipe. Thank you!!
