Small Master Bathroom Remodel

Learn how we transformed our tiny master bathroom with a few simple DIY updates.

Last weekend, amongst the crazy last minute preparations for Playlist Live our awesome friends, Kevin and Haley, helped us semi-remodel our tiny master bathroom. Soon after we bought the house we realized that the shower was not finished properly and was causing water to saturate the adjoining drywall and laminate flooring. Here are a few snapshots of what it looks like after 3 days of hard work and only $150 in supplies and decor (with tile and caulking to spare).

Here’s an iPhone shot of what it looked like before.

Here’s our framed Matte Stephen’s print that I gave Kevin on our last anniversary. We’re such big fans of his retro-inspired illustrations. The wall color is Glidden Wood Smoke in semi-gloss. To make this an almost zero-budget project we kept many of the existing fixtures, like the wall tile (though I can’t stand the fleurs-de-lis). The wood grain hand towels are from West Elm. The Ikea faux succulent and pot is an existing piece we had.

We kept the old mirror, sink, and vanity and toilet. We replaced the original retro faucet with the Delta one you see above about a year ago. I liked it so much we bought the same one for the guest bathroom. I freshened up the sink area with a new Threshold soap dispenser and toothbrush cup.

When we ripped up the old flooring we discovered that it was laminate (which isn’t ideal for a bathroom since their is almost of moisture) that was completely saturated. Then under that was a moisture barrier that was very inflective. Then under that was laminate flooring that was adhered the the original terrazzo flooring. We purchased this rectified porcelain tile from Floor & Decor for only $1.99 a square foot. We opted for a large, rectangular tile to make the bathroom appear a bit larger. We removed the white tile baseboards and put in 5.25″ white wood baseboards. It looks so much cleaner now!

We removed the sliding shower doors since there were causing water to puddle and not drain properly. I picked up this Threshold geometric burnout shower curtain from Target. I wanted something neutral since the space is so tiny, but I didn’t want all white curtain. I also purchased the brushed nickel tension rod from Target.

Here’s our helpful remodel crew (the pups on either side of Darcy are Kevin and Haley’s) and a peak at what the flooring looked like before. I couldn’t be happier with they way it turned out. Thanks so much Kevin and Haley!

  1. Sarah, it looks so great! Those tiles are stunning, and I’m way impressed that you did that all yourself. Maybe this is because I’ve never done an actual house DIY anything…shhh. It looks awesome. Love seeing that those adorable pups could lend a paw too ;)
