I finished our guest bathroom budget redo this past weekend and I’m so excited to finally share it with you! Below is a couple snapshots of what it looked like before. It has the original 1969 mauve-ish colored 4″ square tile, khaki walls, and some really ugly (and hard to clean) shower doors. I started the budget redo by ripping out the shower doors, yes, all by myself. As a side note, I actually feel pretty handy after tackling this project.

I had been wanting to paint the bathroom for quite sometime since it was one of the few places we hadn’t painted since we bought our home 3 years ago. I really had my heart set on wallpaper but the cost was way out of our budget. My second idea was to create a faux wallpaper using adhesive vinyl. I decided on polka dots (you can check out my inspiration board here) and used my handy Silhouette Cameo to cut gold adhesive vinyl in 2″ circles. For more details on how I completed the polka dot walls, check out this post.

There were a total of 5 towel racks and one hook in this tiny bathroom. I removed 2 of the towel racks and eliminated another one when I removed the shower doors. The other 2 towel racks were “built-in” and I wasn’t about to start ripping out tile…at least not yet! I bought a robe hook from Restoration Hardware to replace the towel rack that was on the wall. I placed it right near the shower, so it’s actually functional. It matches the drawer hardware on the vanity that I replaced a couple months ago. And I had a gift card so it didn’t cost my anything!

I kept the quirky Umbra casa tissue box cover. I just love how it’s slightly kitsch and modern at the same time. We swapped out the original 70’s looking faucet for the Delta one (shown above) right after we moved in.

I’m loving the new wire wastebasket. It’s so simple but it brings such a lovely vintage feel to the room.

Do these look kinda familiar? I removed the pink polka dot stickers and painted them white and gold. Recycled and repurposed!

I wanted to add some art to the room and thought a bold, typographic piece would work best. I typed this up (using the font Bebas) and got it printed at FedEx for $.50!

Though I loved the Anthropologie bath mat, I found this one at TJ Maxx for less than a quarter of the price ($7.99).

I’m just smitten by the shower curtain. I had the hardest time finding one that wasn’t, well, ugly. I stumbled upon this one at Urban Outfitters and it ended up being a perfect fit. The week I bought it was only $24 too.

A few other things to note:
– The wall color is Valspar The Bubbly (AR215) in semi-gloss
– The cotton ball and q-tip canisters are from The Container Store
– I had to caulk the crown molding because there were very noticeable gaps between it and the walls. I recommend using Alex Plus all-purpose caulk.
– I used wood putty to fill in the holes in the bathroom door where the towel rack was.
– This tool is absolutely indispensable when scrapping up old caulking. I found it Lowes for a couple dollars and the blades are replaceable.
– I filled in the holes from where shower door was with sanded caulking. It worked just fine, but sank in a bit once it dried. I’m going to try another method and will update this post with my results.

  1. Love this post! The bathroom is beautiful! I’m especially interested in how you transformed the removal of the shower doors to a curtain…more pics and tips on that would be great! I’d like to do the same.
