Don't skip your nightstand when spring cleaning! Line the drawer with pretty floral wrapping paper and use small bins spray painted gold to organize often used items

Now that spring is officially here I am getting pretty anxious to do some serious spring cleaning around here. It seems like just recently I did a decluttering of my office, our closets, and drawers but it’s hard to tell. Everything is looking pretty cluttered again!

While shopping for the new Oh Joy! party goods at Target the other day I also picked up the April issues of Cooking Light and Real Simple. Cooking Light is one of my favorite recipes sources, and this issue is loaded with delicious looking spring recipes. The cover of Real Simple caught my eye because I feel like just about everything in our house could use a cleaning. Right now, Target is running a promotion that if you buy both magazines you get a $5 Target gift card, which is perfect because that means I can use it to buy more party goods on my next visit, or you know, maybe practical things like milk and bread.

The April 2014 issues of Cooking Light and Real Simple are full of great spring recipes and organization tips!

After reading though all the cleaning tips in Real Simple I felt motivated to start some spring cleaning. My first small spring cleaning project was to organize and declutter my nightstand drawer. Though the nightstand looked nice and tidy in last week’s house tour photos, the contents of the drawer were a different story. I am pretty embarrassed to share how bad it was, but in effort to keep things real, here’s what the drawer looked like before I organized it.

So. Much. Stuff.

Clean drawers with a damp paper towel wrapped around a small ruler or squeegee

I started by taking everything out of the drawer and removing the already peeled up contact paper that lined the bottom of the drawer. Then I wiped down the drawer and used a damp paper towel wrapped around a small squeegee to clean the corners of the drawer. This genius idea was in Real Simple. They suggested using a ruler, but since I didn’t have one short enough I used the plastic squeegee instead, though a credit card would have worked too. I then sorted through everything and realized there was a ton of stuff didn’t need to be in there (like old receipts, expired credit cards, and tons of lotion).

Next I lined the drawer with some gorgeous floral gift wrap from Rifle Paper. I just measured the inside of the drawer and then cut the wrapping paper to size. I used my ATG tape gun to apply some double-sided tape to the paper to keep it in place.

I updated the plastic white basket I previously used to hold nail polish with a couple coats of metallic gold spray paint. I was looking for a tray to hold all my nail polish, since the plastic basket wasn’t large enough, but couldn’t find one in the right dimensions. Then I stumbled upon this storage box at Target and it fit perfectly. I removed the lid and added the same gift wrap to the bottom of it and the now gold tray fits perfectly inside.

Great idea to clean out the corners! We have a bookcase full of baskets that we use as storage and they’re just so full of nonsense at this point. That will definitely be my next project.

Oh, it’s time for spring cleaning to begin around these parts too. This is great motivation! I love that you used the Rifle Paper Co. paper to line the drawer, too – my absolute favorite.
