House Tour: Master Bathroom

The house tour continues today with a look at our small master bathroom.

A tiny, master bathroom is transformed by removing the glass sliding shower doors and a fresh coat of paint

Our house tour moves into our tiny master bathroom today. When we were looking at houses four years ago many of the homes had very, very small master bathrooms. Like two people can’t be in the bathroom at the same time small. We actually almost bought a house with a master bathroom that was half the size of our current one. Now whenever I think ours is small, I always think about the house we almost bought and am reminded of how thankful I am (for many reasons) that we ended up buying our current home. But I do have to say, whenever we go on vacation, a big bathroom with a shower and a bathtub are a must! And double sinks? Swoon!

Like our guest bathroom, this bathroom also had sliding glass shower doors. After discovering a leak in the shower (it’s one of those pre-fab units) our handy friend, Kevin, recommended that we remove them or replace them. I hated how the glass doors never looked clean so we opted to replace them with a tension rod and shower curtain, which would be less expensive than replacing them. Plus, I always love a reason to add pattern to any room and a shower curtain does just that. I previously posted some tips on removing glass sliding shower doors here.

Since this bathroom gets a bit less light than our guest bathroom I opted to green up this space with this little faux plant. I know, I know, faux flowers and plants are the worst. But this little Ikea one isn’t too bad, right?

Since our shower was leaking, part of the fix was to retile the floor. Or more accurately, remove the saturated laminate, lining, and linoleum that was underneath and then retile the floor. We chose these affordable 12″ x 24″ porcelain tiles from Floor & Decor and our friend Kevin installed them in exchange for me cooking him a prime rib dinner. I’d say I got the good end of that deal!

Remove the dated towel rack from your bathroom and replace it with more modern looking towel hooks.

I removed the dated, yellowed plastic towel rack and patched up the holes. Then I put up these more contemporary, brushed nickel Delta robe hooks in its place.

This tiny master bathroom gets an upgrade with a new faucet and pretty glass accessories.

We replaced the dated acrylic knob faucet for the same Delta one we put in the guest bathroom.

I swapped the old, rusting chrome hardware for these modern brushed nickel cup pulls.

Use outdoor canvas to make a custom window shade. Sewing a loop at the top and bottom and place a tension rod inside. It gives the look of a Roman shade without the expense!

Since this window faces directly to the east, the morning sun can be pretty intense. I sewed up this faux Roman shade by using some Dwell Studio outdoor fabric. I just hemmed the edges and then folded them over the top and bottom to create a pocket for the tension rod to fit inside. It was a much more affordable option than getting custom blinds and I like how it adds more pattern to the space.

Do you have a smaller master bathroom? If so, how do you maximize its space? I’m always looking for ways to keep things organized and make it feel a bit larger.

  1. Oh how I love Matte Stephens — such a talented artist. The entire bathroom looks wonderful! I’ve been wanted to rip out our sliding glass shower doors since the day we moved in, but unfortunately we rent from my brother & sister in-law, otherwise those things would be gone!
