As part of my home office refresh I updated the existing Ikea Ekby Bjärnum shelf brackets with a few coats of metallic gold spray paint. The new look satisfies my desire to make everything gold and makes them look a little less default.
I first primed the brackets with a coat of Kilz oil-based spray primer and then used Montana Gold spray paint in Goldchrome to give them a metallic gold finish. They needed 3 thin coats to fully cover the metal finish. Though Montana Gold is my favorite spray paint, I found this finish to leave fingerprints. If I were doing this again, I definitely would wear gloves while installing the brackets to avoid smudging the pretty gold finish. And since these brackets have exposed screw heads, I gave them a quick coat of paint with some liquid gilding so they match the brackets.
Do those scalloped storage jars look familiar? I gave the lids a quick coat of spray paint so they now match the gold brackets. The gold storage box is just a plain white box I picked up at the craft store that I covered with some gold mylar tape.
Hmm… I wonder what else can I make gold?

Cute! We have the same shelves in our (former office now turned) nursery. The regular stainless finish works better for our home/style, but I love what you did and love the aged finish you achieved. Nothing tackier than fake looking brass/bronze/gold!
I often wonder the same thing… :)
clever and cute!
Oh, I had to go check this out. It took some digging around; but, I discovered these can hold up to 44 lbs. Perfect for catification (making a space cat friendly). Thank you for showing these off! :-)
How have these held up? I’m going to do it this weekend and wonder if I need to seal the paint? Do they fingerprint still? Thanks!!
