Painting is something I enjoy so much but never take the time to do. Do you have an activity like that? For me, creating is my job but sometimes deadlines and stress can really take the joy out of the process. Time flies and now it’s been over a year since I picked up a paint brush and just painted without a plan. Even though I am a planner (with everything), I love the feeling of picking up a brush and just seeing where it takes you. It’s definitely relaxing and an almost freeing feeling.

I recently spent the morning in front of a blank canvas with the new DecoArt Americana Premium acrylic paints. I didn’t have an plan on what exactly I would create. I just started mixing the paint on my palette and gradually built up layers of pastel blues and grays.

You can watch the video below to see the process!

In whatever I create, I tend to gravitate towards color, and more specifically towards corals, pinks, and golds. If you’ve been following my blog for awhile, you’ll know those colors pop up here a lot. They are just too good to ignore! When I started mixing the paint on my palette I decided to create something slightly quieter than the typical brightly saturated things I’m drawn too.

Because sometimes the negative space can be just as beautiful as lots of color.

Acrylic paint dries quickly, which is great for layering. But when I wanted to blend multiple colors directly on the canvas I added the Extender Medium to the paint. This medium is a clear gel that slows the drying time of the paint and allows you to blend colors oh-so-nicely.

When I wanted to layer the paint, I didn’t add any medium too it. I just waited a couple minutes for it to dry and then layers another color directly on top.

What would you create with the new DecoArt Americana Premium acrylic paints? I had so much fun creating this painting that I can’t wait to do another one.

  1. Wow! I love the color combination. Pink and gold are my favorite. I always use one or both in most of my paintings. I love acrylic paintings too because it feels a lot easier for me to try out and I always come out with something great at the end.
