I’ve always wanted to try printing on paper bags so I thought I would finally give it a try to make some cute Father’s Day gift bags. Though it seems like Mother’s Day just passed, Father’s Day will be here before we know if (June 16th)!

All you need a regular brown paper bags that you can find in your local grocery store, an ink jet printer, and some washi tape (or really thin masking tape). The trick to getting the paper bag to print is using washi tape to tape the bottom fold and the top opening. Nearly every printer loads differently so make sure you know which way your printer print’s images.

Download the free Father’s Day paper bag designs and print away!

I love fashion jewelry. A lot. And it’s kinda a funny thing because I own a few diamond necklaces and a couple strings of pearls (including a gorgeous string of ivory pearls I inherited from my grandmother) but I seem to wear my fashion pieces the most. The necklaces are just piled up on the top of my tall dresser and my large earrings are stored in a little porcelain dish.

I decided to create an organizer for my fashion jewelry and also give the Scotch Color & Pattern Duct Tape a test run. This way my most worn pieces can be accessible (because I’m usually grabbing a bauble necklace or putting on earrings as I walk out the door) and look lovely sitting on top of our dresser. I thought the tape would be a great material to use because it would be an instant way to add bright color and pattern to the jewelry display.

I started out by sketching my idea on paper (nearly all my DIY and design project begin on paper). I decided to use the yellow and white tape to create a color blocking look. I can’t get enough of patterns so I chose to use the Paisley Princess tape on the background.

After sketching my idea I searched around my office for a couple other supplies. I found some cork scraps and an old frame. I love when I’m able to get every last bit of use out of supplies. Then I got to work! Here’s step-by-step photo of how I made this adorable spring-colored jewelry organizer.

1. Draw it! I sketched out my ideas with pencil and paper. / 2. Gather your supplies! I used thick cork scraps, an old flat frame, scissors, three push pins, and Scotch Color & Pattern Duct Tape in Sunshine Yellow, Hot Pink, Pearl White and Paisley Princess. / 3. Cut the cork to fit the frame. Use the tape to adhere it to the frame backing. Draw a diagonal line across the cork and frame. / 4. Cover the bottom section with the tape. Wrap the ends around the back side of the cork sheet. / 5. Repeat this step to cover the rest of the cork sheet. / 6. Use the tape to cover the entire frame. Since my frame was black, I had to cover it with 2 layers of tape. 7. Cut 3 strips of tape a little bit longer than the width of the frame. Fold them in half lengthwise so you have three narrow pieces. Braid them together then tape the ends to the cork sheet. / 8. Place the entire cork sheet in the frame and secure it with a few pieces of tape. Then place the push pins in the cork and you’re ready to display your baubles and beads!

For more ways to use Scotch Color & Pattern Duct Tape, check out their Pinterest boards and Facebook page. There are some really clever (and simple) project ideas!

This week I’ve been adding the finishing touches to our nearly zero-budget bedroom makeover. One of the things I’ve been wanting to add were a few decorative throw pillows. Much to Kevin’s disliking (doesn’t it seem like all men loathe throw pillows?) I won and added these three like pillows.

I purchased two cushions from Jo-Ann’s for 50% off then I used some hand-screen printed fabric that I picked up from The DryGoods Shop in Asheville. I was a bit lazy on the olive green one so please don’t mind my terrible stitching. I made up for my awful sewing on the yellow one and added a fancy (but really easy to do) hidden zipper.

I absolutely love the mix of patterns and textures. We already had the West Elm red heart pillow, I just added it to the mix because I love things in odd numbers.

Want to update your bedroom, too? Today is the last day to enter the Overlay giveaway. They are seriously so easy to apply and you will have your own one-of-a-kind furniture. Win-win!

Ever since I hosted my first Crafternoon a couple years ago (wow, time flies) I’ve wanted to be able to open it up to everyone but our home is tiny so space was always limited. Now I am so excited to announce that I’m partnering with West Elm to host the next craft party at their Orlando store! It’s now called Meet + Make and it’s an evening of meeting new people while making something unique! There will be cupcakes, beverages, and little swag bags too!
So I got a bit carried away with my Ikea hacking last week. I loved the first dresser so much that I painted and added Overlays to the second one. Then I loved that so much I painted and added knobs to our Ikea Malm bedside tables. I just noticed that Ikea no longer sells these… and probably for a good reason. As you can see, they don’t line up with the back of the bed (although we tried our darnedest).

Here’s a look at my “new” bedside table.

I’m still swooning over the streamline knobs. Seriously, you should get them. They’re also available in brass and copper finishes.

And here’s his side. Notice the difference in reading materials? Oh, and don’t mind my never hemmed sheer window panels.

Here’s my tutorial on how to paint Ikea laminate furniture. Want to customize your own Ikea furntiure? Overlays is giving away a $50 gift card so you can! Click here for the contest details.

I hope you had a wonderful weekend celebrating the amazing women in your life. And if you’re a mom, I hope you were able to relax, too! I spent the weekend catching up on DIY home projects including adding the final details to our second Ikea Malm dresser. Last week I shared how I transformed our standard Ikea Malm 6-dresser into mid-century modern inspired piece. Kevin and I both loved the look so much that I decided to do a similar update to our Ikea Malm tall 6-drawer dresser!

Want to give Overlays a try and customize your own Ikea dresser? You’re in luck! The lovely ladies at Overlays are giving away a $50 gift certificate to one lucky winner. Get ready for some Ikea hacking! Here’s how to enter:

2. Do it before this Friday, May 17th at 11:59 p.m. EST.
3. For an extra entry: like Sarah Hearts and Overlays on Facebook then come back and let us know you did in the comments (be sure to include your email).

Details// The contest is only open to those in the U.S. The winner will be randomly selected and will be contacted via email after the contest closes. If I don’t receive an email response from the winner by May 24th, another winner will be randomly chosen.

The winner is Hana! This contest is now closed. Thanks to all those that entered!

Love the white on white look!

Hello lovely mid-century modern hardware.

I used the same process to sand, prime and paint the drawers as the other dresser (check out my tutorial here). This time I the Overlays to four of the drawers and only added hardware to one. I splurged a bit on the streamline knobs (they were $6 each… I know, not what you were thinking, but compared to the others that were only $1.38 each I thought it was a big jump in price).

Here are both dressers arranged side by side. 3 days of work, a few supplies, and now we have new bedroom furniture!

Want to give Overlays a try? They are offering 15% to Sarah Hearts readers. Just use the code HEARTS15 at checkout.

Overlays provided the Olivia overlays to complete this project in exchange for this post. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thanks so much for supporting the brands that enable me to share my ideas with you!

Wow today was busy! I ran errands and wrapped up several home DIY projects (which I’ll sharing next week). This week I made 3 trips to Target and 2 to Home Depot. I think the employees are starting to recognize me there. Not sure if that’s a good thing though?

I’m planning on continuing my DIY streak and hopefully crossing a few tasks of my list. One of which is painting the hallway. I’d avoided it for a long time because it’s a dark khaki color and will certainly need at least 2 coats of paint and there are so many shelves that I will have to be pretty meticulous. What are you up to this weekend? If you’re a mom, any plans to relax and enjoy your family? I’ll be spending Mother’s Day away from my mom but were heading back to Southern Cross Ranch in a few weeks for a week of riding, Southern food, and lots of wine. I can’t wait!

If you still need a gift for your mom (or aunt, grandma, sister, wife) you and always find a pretty plant and wrap the container with my printable Mother’s Day planter gift. Have a lovely, restful weekend and Happy Mother’s Day to all you moms out there!

The photo above was taken at my wedding, four and a half years ago. Time flies!
