I’m kinda crazy about all things rose gold. I want rose gold jewelry, accessories, and pretty much anything else in the lovely shimmery hue. So to satisfy my rose gold craving I decided to make some super simple panted cork placemats. We’ve been using the same placemats for the past 5 years so I thought it was time for a (DIY) refresh.

Supplies:

• Rose gold craft paint (I used the Martha Stewart craft paint)
Cork squares
• Painter’s tape
• Foam paint brush

Stick the tape onto one sheet of cork. I placed mine at a different angle on each tile so they would each be slightly different. Then use the foam brush to apply a coat of the craft paint. Allow that to dry completely then and a second coat. I applied 3 coats on mine.

I’m loving our new placemats so much that I’m leaving them on the table after dinner is done. I think they would also look great in other metallic colors.

Sorry for the inconsistent color among the photos. That’s what I get for shooting these photos later in the day.

  1. Hi Sarah,

Love your idea of doing something ‘unusual’ with cork placemats, looks like you had fun making these. We had a similar idea in utilizing cork placemats last year and took plain boring old cork and transformed it into a bunch of beautiful patterned placemats/coasters and alike.

Check out our site http://www.decorque.com, were a small family run business based in Oxfordshire. Let us know what you think? We would love to hear from you.

    Many thanks

  2. Hey Sarah,

I love this idea. Placemats are so expensive and even at Homegoods and TJ Maxx, its hard to find 8 or 10 that match. Where can I find the cork if I didn’t want to order it online?

    Thanks,
    Jessi

    1. I didn’t seal them and they’ve held up great! If you use another brand of paint, I’d recommend sealing them with dishwasher safe Mod Podge (even though they won’t go in the dishwasher, that will help seal them!)

  3. Hi Sarah, Do you think that this would look good with a satin finish Martha Stewart paint or does the metallic really help it to pop?

    1. If you’re going for a gold or rose gold look I’d definitely recommend using the metallic paint! It really pops against the natural matte finish of the cork.
