DIY Gold Scalloped Edge Napkins

Ok, so I may have an obsession with scallops. And when they are gold, they have me swooning. I dreamt up creating cloth napkins with gold scalloped edges quite some time ago and finally gave it a try. The results have me wanting to make more of these so I can use them during the holidays. I mean, our Thanksgiving dinner needs gold scallops don’t you think?

I used gold pleather for the gold scalloped edges because it has a great metallic finish and won’t fray like regular woven fabrics. This project will definitely make you rethink pleather. While I’m not a fan of using it clothing (I seriously can’t pull it off) it really does make for some lovely little napkins.

Don’t let the supply list overwhelm you, these adorable napkins were actually quite simple and very fun to make. Once you have the gold vinyl cut out they sew up rather quickly.

Supplies:

– Download the scallop
– Cloth napkins (I used these and love how they don’t wrinkle much after washing)
– Gold vinyl or pleather (you can find this at local fabric stores)
– Silhouette sewable interfacing
– Leather needles
– Thread in the same color as your napkins

Tools:
– Sewing machine
– Silhouette Cameo with a fabric blade
– 12″ x 24 cutting mat
– Iron and ironing board

Step 1: Prewash and dry the napkins. Iron if necessary. Use an iron in the wool or low heat setting to adhere the textured side of the sewable interfacing onto the back side of the pleather. You’ll want to make sure every bit of it is adhered to the pleather. If it’s not, it will cause the fabric to wrinkle and jam in your machine.

Step 2: Load the gold pleather with the interfacing onto the 12″ x 24″ cutting mat, with the gold  side up. The pleather cuts best with sticky mats so if yours is pretty worn get a new one before cutting our the vinyl. Then cut out the scallops using your Silhouette, you’ll need one per napkin. I created a new setting in Silhouette Connect for cutting pleather. I recommend using the following settings:

– Blade 10 (you manually adjust this)
– Speed 3
– Thickness 33
– Do not double cut

Step 3: Place one scalloped edge underneath the wrong side of a napkin. Make sure the gold vinyl is slightly above the existing hem line. Pin in place.

Step 4: Sew on top of the existing seam using a straight stitch to sew the gold vinyl to the napkin. You may need to trim the gold vinyl if it’s a little longer than the napkin. Repeat with the other napkins and then they are ready to be used at your next dinner!
