DIY Scalloped Ikea Cork Placemats

DIY Scallop Cork Ikea Placemats

If you’ve been following me for awhile, you know I have a thing for scallops (and if you’re new around here you can see all my scallop projects here). I seriously don’t think I’ll get get tired of the pattern. It’s cute, playful, geometric and can be put on just about any surface. Today I continued my scallop trend by putting them on a set of Ikea placemats.

I used the same process as I did when creating a scalloped boarder on a floppy hat, except rather than use the edge of the hat to create the scallop I used a strip of stencil, or making, tape.

Supplies

Ikea Avskild cork placemats
White craft paint
Foam pouncer
Stencil tape
Tray for paint (I love using this plate)

Directions

  1. Starting at the bottom apply a piece of tape all the way across the cork placemat. Use your hands to smooth it out and make sure it’s firmly adhered to the surface.
  2. Add some white craft paint to the paint tray and use a foam pouncer to stamp along the edge of the tape. To create the look of scallops, position the pouncer so it’s half way on the tape and half way on the placemat.
  3. Repeat this process until the entire placemat is covered. Remove the tape immediately after painting (to prevent the paint from drying and sticking to the tape) and allow it to dry completely.

This project is so easy to make and totally kid friendly. It only takes about 10 minutes to stamp each placemat so you could whip up a ton of these for your next dinner party. I opted for a more subtle pattern by using only white paint, but it would also look adorable in multiple colors.

This looks so awesome! I’ve never worked with cork boards other than bulletin boards, so I hope it’s a similar process. This would be great for me to eat my lunch at my desk.
